organized writing
- the view from nowhere I used to think that people who found comfort in meaning were just a little weaker than me.
- does my sadness make me interesting? I think we have decided, collectively, without much debate and without much scrutiny, that sadness is interesting and happiness is not.
- A Pragmatic Escape from Hume's Circle Written for my first year philosophy class. Started at 8 pm one week after it was due, and finished at 1 am that same night (next morning? whatever). I wrote it all in one go, so not a single revision was made! I have no recollection of those frantic hours, and the reasoning used in this piece has long since been forgotten. If anyone would like to explain my own essay back to me, that would be wonderful.
- Why Descartes Cannot Absolve God of Human Error I write about Descartes and his Meditations (specifically the fourth; unfortunately does not cover or even reference cogito, ergo sum—maybe for another day). On divine architects, foreseeable failure, the will’s overreach, and the impossibility of a moral God. Written for first-year philosophy class.
- Higher Law and Human Duty: Socrates as Precedent for King’s Civil Disobedience Written for first-year philosophy class. Maybe the worst written of all my essays, but I'll just blame it on not having written academically since my college apps the year prior. On Plato's Five Dialogues, moral integrity in an unjust society, and commonalities between Socrates and Martin Luther King
- the fig tree I revisit The Bell Jar’s fig tree passage and how it’s taken root in my life. On Sylvia Plath, ripe fruit, and the fear of an unlived life.
